Trouble Shooter

Microwave

Problem: Slower cooking times
Reason: Infrequent cleaning, cooking can be slowed when a build-up of food particles on the walls or floor of the oven absorb microwave energy.
Solution: Clean oven after every use with soft damp cloth. Remove foods that have cooked onto oven surfaces by boiling 1 cup of water in a bowl for several minutes. The steam condenses on the oven surfaces and makes the soil easier to remove, wipe off with paper towel or soft damp cloth. Don’t use steel-wool pads they could cause surface scratches and possible rusting.

Problem: Unpleasant odors
Reasons: Food soil build-up, strong flavored foods, burnt odors.
Solutions: Clean all spatters and spills immediately. Check the inside vent areas to make sure that food has not built up in the openings. To remove odors, boil a solution of ½ cup lemon juice or white vinegar and 1 cup water for several minutes then let stand for 5-6 minutes.

Laundry

Problem: Stains caused by rinse-added softeners are blue and gray in color, often greasy looking and feeling.
Reasons: Undiluted fabric softener poured directly onto fabric. Adding fabric softener in the wash cycle with detergent or bleach. Un-removed soil may combine with fabric softener and create a gray or dark-looking greasy stain.
Solutions:

  • Never combine fabric softener with detergent or bleach. These products may react together to cause staining.
  • Dilute fabric softener with ½ to 1 cup of water.
  • Never pour softener directly onto fabrics. Avoid dripping or spilling any fabric softener on the load.
  • Add fabric softener to the deep or final rinse of the wash cycle.
  • If using dispenser on washer, follow directions carefully. Do not overfill dispenser. Do not lift the washer lid after agitation ends. Fabric softener will be dispensed improperly and may cause staining.
  • Use the amount of fabric softener recommended by the manufacturer.

Problem: Overall discoloration, dingy appearance or streaky/blotchy stains on load items.
Reason: Washing dark colored items with light-colored items.

Solution: Properly sorting dark items with light-colored items and washing separately.

Problem: Excessive wrinkling, twisting and tangling of items resulting in wrinkling.
Solution: Wash items in correct cycle with similar items of fabric types. Don’t wash full loads of items with straps (i.e. bras, ties long sleeves.) Don’t overload.

Problem: Lint
Solution: Separate lint givers ( i.e. chenille, towels, sweatshirts) from lint takers ( i.e. corduroy, permanent press, synthetics.)

Problem: Snags, picks, pulls, holes and tearing. Items wearing out prematurely.
Solution: Separate items with buckles, zippers or sharp objects from delicate items. Use correct cycle and don’t overload, overloading the washer can cause too much rubbing of items.

Problem: Soil re-deposition
Solution: Separate lightly soiled items from heavily soiled items, even if they would normally be washed together. Washing heavily soiled items with lightly soiled items can cause soil to transfer to lightly soiled items.

Problem: Washer will not operate
Solutions:

  • Check the fuses, breakers and the plug. The washer should be on a separate outlet.
  • Is the washer lid down? The washer will not operate with the lid up
  • Be sure the lid switch probe has not been knocked out, this is a small plastic piece which fits into a hole on the under side of the open lid. It activates the washer’s lid switch when the lid is placed in the closed position.
  • Is water turned on to washer? Some washers will not run until filled to the level selected.

Refrigerator

Problem: Condensation on the refrigerator-freezer cabinet
Reason: Condensation on the refrigerator-freezer cabinet is normal in hot, humid weather.
Solution: Cool room temperature during warm, humid months. Air conditioning not only cools the air but also dehumidifies- removing excessive moisture from the air and reducing the chance of sweating on your refrigerator-freezer. Check for a tight seal on refrigerator-freezer cabinet doors. A poor gasket seal allows cold compartment air to escape. Sweating will most likely form around the door opening if the door seal is poor.

Problem: Ice cubes smell bad or taste bad
Reason: Impurities in water supply, old water filter, absorbed odor/taste from other food in freezer
Solution: Using a water filter on the incoming water supply line, if you already have a water filter remember to replace it on a regular basis (every 6 months.) Also make sure other foods in the freezer are well covered, the ice cubes can easily absorb strong odors and taste from other foods in freezer. Be sure to empty out old ice cubes that have been sitting in the ice tray for a long time.

Problem: My refrigerator is running, but it is not cool or cool enough.
Solutions:

  • Allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool down after initial start-up.
  • Check the temperature control settings, it may be set too low.
  • Check to see if the condenser is dirty, the condenser the coils under the refrigerator, behind the kick plate, may be clogged with lint or dust.
  • Make sure door gaskets are sealing properly.
  • Make sure the interior lights are going off when doors are closed.
  • Make sure the freezer and refrigerator are ½ to ¾ full. The refrigerator will not cool properly when empty.

Problem: I have frost accumulation on my freezer walls or floor
Solutions:

  • Check the door gaskets to make sure they are sealing properly and are not torn or split.
  • You may need to clean the drain tube.
  • It may be a clogged drain.
  • Make sure there are no packages resting against the rear wall.

Problem: I have water on my floor
Solutions:

  • Check the drip pan, the drip pan may be out of position or have a hole in it.
  • Check to see if ice has accumulated on the floor of the freezer under the storage bin, this could indicate a clogged drain tube.
  • Check the copper water line to the water valve, it may be loose or split.
  • Check the plastic fill-line from the water valve to the icemaker, it may be loose or split.
  • Check the water valve to see if it is leaking or flooding.

Dishwasher

Problem: Cloudiness on glasses
Reason: Filming or etching
Solution: To remove hard water filming, add a hard water film/spot remover product to your detergent.
